Self-ordering at the table: a workflow for small restaurants

Self-ordering does not remove the work of restaurant staff. It moves selection and submission to the guest’s phone, while the venue still has to validate, prepare and deliver the order.

The flow from scanning to acceptance

A guest scans the correct table code, browses, selects items and submits. The guest needs a clear success state and staff need to identify and process the incoming request.

  • Identify venue and table
  • Review the cart and submit
  • Staff confirm table and items
  • Kitchen or drinks station progresses the order

Failure cases to plan for

A guest may submit twice when the internet is slow. An item may sell out, or a guest may move tables. A good workflow makes those issues visible and recoverable.

  • Connection fails while submitting
  • The guest taps twice
  • Two staff members act on one order
  • An item is unavailable

How to introduce ordering to guests

A small sign that says “Scan to order” and staff willing to help is often enough to start. Keep an alternative for guests who prefer to speak to a server.

Measure actual usefulness

Track successfully submitted orders, table mix-ups, manually re-entered items and staff feedback. Evaluate the system across several busy periods rather than one smooth demonstration.
